Orthopaedic consultation
Assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning
An orthopaedic consultation is an assessment by a doctor to evaluate the possible causes of a musculoskeletal complaint and to decide on a suitable treatment plan.
The doctor first listens to the history of the complaint: when it started, which movements make it worse or better, previous treatments and any accompanying symptoms are all considered. The physical examination then looks at joint movement, muscle strength, tenderness, swelling, stability and any special tests considered necessary.
If needed, an X-ray is requested and can be taken at our clinic during the same visit. If an MRI, CT or other advanced imaging is required, an appropriate referral is made and the results are assessed together with the clinical findings.
At the end of the consultation, the findings, the possible diagnosis and the treatment options are shared with the patient. If physiotherapy and rehabilitation are needed, the programme can be planned with the orthopaedic specialist and the physiotherapist in communication with each other.
Bringing any previous X-rays, MRI scans and reports, a list of the medicines you take and documents relating to any operations you have had will make the assessment easier.
