X-ray
Assessment of fractures, joints and the spine
An X-ray is a quick imaging method commonly used to assess bones and joints in particular. It can support the clinical examination in situations such as a suspected fracture, some joint problems, curvatures of the spine and the assessment of osteoarthritis.
Our clinic has a digital X-ray system. If the doctor decides during the consultation that an X-ray is needed, it can be taken during the same visit and the images can be reviewed straight away.
The X-ray usually takes only a short time and is not painful. Depending on the area being imaged, you may be asked to remove some metal items. Because X-rays use ionising radiation, if you are pregnant or could be pregnant, always tell the healthcare team before the X-ray is taken.
Images can be stored digitally and compared with previous X-rays when needed. This comparison is particularly useful in assessing fracture healing and conditions that are followed over time, such as scoliosis.
An X-ray does not show every musculoskeletal problem. When ligaments, tendons, muscles, the meniscus or nerve tissue need to be assessed in detail, other imaging methods may be needed.
