Post-operative follow-up
Check-ups coordinated with rehabilitation
Post-operative follow-up is the assessment of whether recovery after surgery is progressing as expected. Wound healing, pain, swelling, range of motion, function and, when needed, bone or tissue healing are checked at set intervals.
At our clinic, orthopaedic follow-up and the physiotherapy programme can be run together. While the doctor assesses the stage of surgical healing, the physiotherapist progresses the rehabilitation programme according to the type of surgery, weight-bearing limits and current findings.
If you had your operation at another centre, it is important to bring your operation report, any imaging and your surgeon's instructions on weight-bearing, movement or the use of protective devices.
Every operation has a different rehabilitation timeline. When to start bearing weight, when particular movements can begin and when to return to work or sport are determined by the procedure performed, tissue healing and the person's function.
If you develop increasing pain or swelling, a fever, marked redness of the wound, or foul-smelling or increasing discharge, contact your healthcare team without waiting for your planned check-up.
