Myofascial techniques
Restricted movement related to fascia
Fascia is part of the connective tissue system that surrounds and connects muscles and other structures. In some people, tenderness or restricted movement in muscles, fascia and other soft tissues may occur together with pain and difficulty moving.
Myofascial techniques is the general name for controlled pressure and stretching methods applied by hand to the soft tissues. The aim is not to forcibly “release” the tissue, but to help reduce pain and improve movement tolerance and soft tissue mobility.
They may be used as part of a rehabilitation programme for tension in the neck and shoulders, some lower back pain, movement restrictions and soft tissue stiffness after surgery. Their effect varies from person to person, and they are not a method that identifies the source of pain on their own.
During treatment you may feel light or deeper, but tolerable, pressure. Afterwards, temporary relief or brief tenderness may occur.
The assessment does not focus only on the spot where the pain is felt. Neighbouring joints and muscles working in the same movement chain, as well as everyday movement habits, may also be examined; treatment is planned accordingly.
