Manual therapy
Joint mobilisation, hands-on techniques
Manual therapy is a general approach that includes joint mobilisations and various soft tissue techniques applied with the physiotherapist's hands. In selected patients, it may be used to help reduce pain and improve range of motion and confidence in movement.
It can be added to a rehabilitation programme in some situations where there is restricted movement in the neck, lower back, shoulder or other joints. Which technique is suitable is determined by the diagnosis, the examination findings, and the person's age and health.
Before treatment, range of motion, pain and function are assessed. When needed, the same measurements are repeated in later sessions to track change.
Manual therapy does not usually replace active rehabilitation. It is preferably used together with exercise, gradual loading and movement training, so that short-term gains in pain or movement carry over into daily life and are maintained.
