Kinesio taping

Muscle and joint support

Kinesio tape is an elastic tape that adapts to the movement of the skin. Unlike rigid sports tapes, in most applications it can be used without fully restricting joint movement.

It may be used in some musculoskeletal problems to provide temporary comfort, to act as a sensory reminder during movement, or in certain situations to support oedema management. Its effect varies according to the purpose of the application and the person; taping on its own does not “correct” a joint or a muscle.

In suitable skin conditions, the tape can stay on for a few days and most people can shower with it. The skin should be clean and dry before application; if thick hair prevents the tape from sticking, it can be trimmed when needed.

Kinesio taping is generally used as a support alongside exercise and other rehabilitation treatments; it does not replace them.

If marked redness, itching, burning or discomfort develops on the skin, the tape should be removed. It is not applied to areas with open wounds, active skin infection or a known allergy to the tape.
